The number three greatest risk for American children is drowning.
Each year approximately 253,000 people worldwide drown in pools, beaches or other bodies of water. That is 30 people per hour with a high portion of these under the age of 5. In the United States alone each year in excess of 1800 people drown in swimming pools and 300 of these are children under the age of 5 (toddlers, babies, and kids). For every child under 5 that drowns there are over 2200 that require hospital treatment for submersion injuries. The cost for these victims can range from US$2,000 to US$80,000 and sometimes in excess of US$150,000.
Drowning is defined as a death resulting from suffocation within 24 hours of submersion of water. Victims of near drowning survive for atleast 24 hours after submersion. 30% of those who are admitted to hospital in a comatose condition after submersion and survive suffer significant neurologic damage. The cost of care for these survivors is approximately US$100,000 per year.

In the United States the second leading cause of unintentional death for persons aged between 5 and 44 years old is drowning. For ages under 14 years old drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death. It has been reported that for children under 17 years old the average age of hospitalisation due to submersion is 6 years old and the average age for new drowning in pools is 4 years old.
Drowning and near drowning's tend to occur when the children are in familiar surrounds and are being supervised by a parent. The drowning's occurred during short lapses in supervision. Most drowning of toddlers (under 6yrs old) were being supervised or under the care of 1 or both parent at the time.
